If you follow our Fuel Matters Blog, you already know that different seasons bring changes in fuel composition and the fuel market. Here is the breakdown – some states require gasoline retailers to switch to summer-blend gasoline from June 1 to September 15. By explaining the benefits of summer-blend fuel, Guttman Energy helps readers understand the details of this policy, so they can plan summer trips and fuel budgets throughout the summer travel season.
Better For the Environment
Summer and winter-blend fuels feature important differences, primarily that winter-blend fuel requires an increased RVP (Reid vapor pressure) measurement to power engines safely and reliably when temperatures drop below freezing. However, using this same fuel during the summer months would generate excess burn-off, contributing to fuel waste, increased emissions, and air pollution. As a result, the EPA requires the RVP specification of fuel sold in most states to be lessened to a more environmentally-friendly level. To meet this spec, a specific formulation of gas must be blended. 1
Boost in Fuel Economy
Lower RVP benefits both the environment and engines. The summer-grade blend boosts fuel economy significantly due to the lack of speedy evaporation. In fact, on average, summer-blend fuel contains 1.7% more energy than the standard winter blend.2
Blending Process
A more intensive blending process required for summer-blend gasoline achieves the required lower evaporation point. These cost a bit more than winter-blend additives, while the blending and refining process also takes a bit longer. This makes summer-blend gasoline about five to ten cents more expensive per gallon. However, experts believe the extra MPG that summer blend provides vehicles effectively offsets these costs. 3
